Wedding garters

No wedding reception is complete without wedding garters. As tradition has it, the bride will wear wedding garters and the groom will remove the garter from her leg and toss it to the bachelors. Much like the woman that catches the bouquet, the man who gets the garter will be the next to be married.

Sometimes wedding garters come in the traditional blue, thus fulfilling the old wives tale that the bride needs “something borrowed and something blue” for a lucky marriage. The color blue also represents purity and fidelity. Most garters will come made in satin with lace accents and colored ribbon and bows. You may also choose from gold, purple, white and silver accents, or other less traditional colors if you are a funky bride.

The tradition of wedding garters is said to have started in Europe in the 1300’s. It is rumored that single ladies would be so jealous of a brides good fortune that they would try to tear at her wedding dress to rip a swatch of the gown off for their own good luck.
